Auburn Road Vineyard is on the western bank of the Tamar River in the north of Tasmania, Australia’s island state celebrated for its wilderness areas, natural beauty and pristine environment. Australia’s most southerly wine region, Tasmania is also its coolest.
The vineyard has views to the north over the Tamar River estuary and Bass Strait, which exerts a strong maritime influence. The vines are planted on slopes with good drainage and protect against frost. There is a spring-fed dam for water security, an increasingly important consideration in all our vineyards.
Handpicked Wines purchased the property in 2018 with five hectares under vine; a further five hectares will be planted beginning spring 2020. Here we grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for regional and single vineyard wines, as well as our first Tasmania sparkling wine, due for first release in time for Christmas 2020.
Stands of indigenous forest and an abundance of native wildlife and birds, including majestic wild peacocks, complete the picture at this idyllic place in a very special corner of the world.
